I awoke to the sound of the buzzing alarm clock in my right ear. Startled, I rolled out of bed with wide eyes, and then hit the cold concrete ground. Ouch! That would definitely hurt later today. I stood up and quickly turned off the alarm clock, realizing I had no time to waste. I tip-toed out of my small closet-sized bedroom and into the living room. No one was up yet but me. I went into the kitchen and made breakfast; a cold bagel with cream cheese. Instead of eating it, I packed it in a paper bag and then made another. Then I returned to my room to get dressed and pack my bag. I brushed my straight blonde hair and cut my bangs so they were just covering my eyebrows. I wore a gray zip up sweatshirt and blue skinny jeans.
An hour later, I was ready. It was five in the morning, and lucky for me, my parents were still asleep. I heard the three knocks on my door and knew that was the sign. I picked up my bag and walked over to the door, ready to leave.
My friend Ash waited there, carrying a worn blue backpack. She was wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans. Her black hair was in her eyes like usual. It was still dark outside, and we had to walk at least a two miles to get to our destination.
"Is that everything?" she asked.
"Yeah." I stepped outside and felt the cold morning air hit me. Frost had settled on the ground overnight.
"We're going to be so screwed if we can't get past stage one."
"I know. It's our only chance though."
"And if we fail?"
"
We'll be grounded for life." I looked forwards as we stepped into the dark woods. I took a deep breath, still not believing the day had finally come.
We were entering the Minderra Dragon Tournament. The team who won would receive fame and fortune beyond their wildest dreams. Yet if we failed, we would lose everything. And possibly lose our lives.
